#4 – UTFO – UTFO
While album tracks like “Lisa Lips” and “Bite It” were well received, it was their accidentally iconic piece “Roxanne, Roxanne” that lit up the radio and the streets, but first – a little backstory:
The UnTouchable Force Organization bka U.T.F.O. released a single in 1984 called “Hanging Out” with “Roxanne Roxanne” as the B-Side track about a fictitious girl by the name of “Roxanne” who rejected the advances of members Kangol Kid, Educated Rapper, and Doctor Ice – each spitting a verse about their encounter with her. Of course, this was one of those times the B-side outperformed the actual release.
BUT, not long after that, an “answer” record called “Roxanne’s Revenge” (by none other than the ICONIC Roxanne Shante), had taken over the streets. We won’t get in to the “why” it was recorded, but it immediately took off!
Not to get left behind by something THEY created, UTFO and Full Force decided to put out their own “answer” record to “Roxanne, Roxanne”. They got a young lady by the name of Elease Jack, gave her the “Roxanne” persona, and recorded “The Real Roxanne”, but Jack’s mother put a stop to this (she didn’t want her daughter involved in the music industry), and Elease was quickly replaced by Adelaida Martinez, the Real Roxanne most are familiar with.
Shante, insulted at another Roxanne on the scene, responded with “Bite This” and “Queen of Rox (Shante Rox On)” which not only turned it into a battle over who was the “real” Roxanne, but also had the unintentional effect of creating a FLOOD of Roxanne-themed “answer” records. THIS is how the infamous “Roxanne Wars” of 1985 – as well as recorded Hip-Hop beefs – actually started. There was “Parents of Roxanne”, “Do The Roxanne”, “Roxanne’s Doctor” (yes…Roxanne’s Doctor) – I mean, it REALLY got crazy! There’s got to be at least 40 (if not more) of these “answer” records out here ![]()
So yeah, “Roxanne, Roxanne”, “The Real Roxanne”, and “Calling Her a Crab” are all on here!
4 down, 46 to go! ![]()
